Three Wise Men

Jazz friends with the European Songbook

Tickets

Three Wise Men have established themselves for many years as one of Europe’s leading classical jazz trios. Founded in 2007 by Dutchman Frank Roberscheuten, the trio tours throughout Europe.

Bandleader Frank Roberscheuten was awarded the “Keeper Of The Flame” prize in March 2016 for his work in the field of traditional jazz.

Rossano Sportiello, the Milan-born, New York-based pianist, is considered the heart of the trio. After studying classical piano in Milan, he established himself in the jazz center of the world, New York City, and plays an astonishing variety of styles that mix classical, stride piano and bebop.

Martin Breinschmid, the Viennese drummer and percussionist, provides the rhythmic foundation for the Wise Men. His passion for virtuoso swing drumming à la Gene Krupa, vibraphone à la Lionel Hampton and the use of unusual percussion objects set him apart.

Program

The European Songbook

Have you ever wondered what the jazz repertoire would look like today if musicians like Louis Armstrong or Charlie Parker had chosen compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach, Guiseppe Verdi, Franz Lehár or Ennio Morricone for their improvisations?
The “Three Wise Men” provide an interesting and completely new answer to this question with their new project, the “European Songbook”.

15 titles from European music history from Johann Sebastian Bach to Toots Thielemanns from Franz Lehar to Ennio Morricone are reworked into swinging jazz standards.

“Sportiello is the best Italian import since Barolo.”
